"Hey, Alexa. What is AI?"

DR EMILY PRITCHARD & NATHAN CROCK, JUN 28, 2018 -

Description

A human exploration of Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning are in the news every day -- and for good reason. Recent breakthroughs in AI research combined with more powerful processing and storage technologies have enabled computer applications to become smarter at exponential rates. You’ve probably noticed that Google, Siri, and Alexa have gotten much better at anticipating your needs. Soon you’ll be able have full conversations with them.

AI applications are providing new conveniences for consumers, and new opportunities for businesses. Worldwide spending on AI will reach $19.1 billion in 2018, and is expected to grow to $52.2 billion by 2021. AI applications impact every industry. By 2021, it is expected that 75% of enterprise applications will incorporate AI. AI has become a key to competitive advantage for businesses and governments. Recently the European Commission vowed to boost its investment in Artificial Intelligence by about 70 percent to 1.5 billion euros ($1.83 billion) in order to catch up with Asia and the United States, which are each investing at least three times more than Europe.

Clearly, AI is poised to become an integral part of all of our lives. That’s why the Moonshot team is dedicating a year to exploring the most important aspects of AI beginning with this exploration of AI basics. Join our subject area experts Dr. Emily Pritchard and Visiting Scholar and PhD Candidate, Nathan Crock, as they lay out in plain language just how smart computers are and how smart they are likely to get, what Machine Learning is and how it powers a wide range of applications, and important considerations to keep in mind as the influence of these technologies grows.
