MOONSHOTS
EVENTS 2016-2020

PANEL, AUG 8, 2018 -

Description

“We choose to go to the Moon! We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win...” President John F. Kennedy

“Moonshot” refers to any awesome, fantastic, almost impossible goal to be achieved, often through the use of new technologies, in order to solve a vexing, complex, and/or wicked problem.

Moonshots require people to “think different,” approaching a problem in a radically different fashion, rather than making incremental improvements to an existing system. What are the vexing, complex and wicked problems that face our community? Are there any Moonshot solutions that just might be crazy enough to work?

At this Moonshot Social, we will invite candidates to share their “moonshot ideas” in an open, respectful, and non-confrontational setting, as well as let the public to ask questions and proffer their own ideas.

A human exploration of Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning are in the news every day -- and for good reason. Recent breakthroughs in AI research combined with more powerful processing and storage technologies have enabled computer applications to become smarter at exponential rates. You’ve probably noticed that Google, Siri, and Alexa have gotten much better at anticipating your needs. Soon you’ll be able have full conversations with them.

AI applications are providing new conveniences for consumers, and new opportunities for businesses. Worldwide spending on AI will reach $19.1 billion in 2018, and is expected to grow to $52.2 billion by 2021. AI applications impact every industry. By 2021, it is expected that 75% of enterprise applications will incorporate AI. AI has become a key to competitive advantage for businesses and governments. Recently the European Commission vowed to boost its investment in Artificial Intelligence by about 70 percent to 1.5 billion euros ($1.83 billion) in order to catch up with Asia and the United States, which are each investing at least three times more than Europe.

Clearly, AI is poised to become an integral part of all of our lives. That’s why the Moonshot team is dedicating a year to exploring the most important aspects of AI beginning with this exploration of AI basics. Join our subject area experts Dr. Emily Pritchard and Visiting Scholar and PhD Candidate, Nathan Crock, as they lay out in plain language just how smart computers are and how smart they are likely to get, what Machine Learning is and how it powers a wide range of applications, and important considerations to keep in mind as the influence of these technologies grows.

Description

In light of the recent events related to the Facebook data breach, the spread of misinformation, and the value of personal data, you're invited to a small group discussion about "Big Scary Data." Your input to the conversation will help us plan for future Moonshot Nights, as well as identify opportunities for us to work together to invent the future.

Attendees will enjoy adult beverages and heavy appetizers while chatting with Peter Knowlton of the SXSW award-winning online security company, Ghostery.
